the first fuck up was the mix up, the second was not to immediately apologise to the the author, but

tell her she couldn't be on the shortlist.
i mean awarded through virtue of having a similar sounding book title? kind of ridiculous.
it's now a rather impossible situation because the panelists accepted the book, but to cover their own arses are urging the author to withdraw the book herself, putting the pressure on her.
she obviously should withdraw and can still come out of it with her dignity intact BY NOT MAKING A BIG FUSS OUT OF IT!
if i was her and her agent, i'd be super pissed off at this blogger (the agent's wife) for kicking up a stink

Basically, the awards committee made a fubar over the phone, and the person taking notes on the shortlist of nominations misheard Chime as Shine. This error was "corrected" by having a shortlist of 6 instead of 5 books, which all sounds fine.
However, the awards chairman has since asked the author of Shine to withdraw her book from the competition "to preserve the integrity of the awards". What? How on earth does that make anything better?
Apparently the author is being all kinds of amazingly classy about this, but naturally Twitter and the blogosphere are up in arms.
I'm linking you to a blog by Libba Bray, because I found it interesting and think you might too.

In fact I'm now far more tempted to read her books than Lauren Myracle's...

Yeah, I was confused that the NBA was focusing on a book and not on... itself.

Side question- Are these awards publicly voted for, or is it some commmitee who makes the choice?
