I guess I always try and stay a little bit aware of my surroundings when I am in a public area. It still goes back to basic social skills. You don't try and talk to the girl in the corner with her face buried in a book and ipod on but they lady reading a book and checking her watch will probably be willing talk. You should be able to tell the difference between someone just reading to pass the time and someone engrossed in a book.

What I do if I don't want to be disturbed is put in some headphones but I don't play any music because it distracts me from what I am reading. Most people will not talk to someone wearing headphones and the people who will talk to you no matter what.
