History books always get less interesting the closer they get to the present. I used to HATE the part in our high school books that came after the war. It stops being history and becomes ... something else. 
This isn't quite true, of course. It can be quite interesting to look at the slant and assumptions of such books, but I think it occupies a different part of my brain.
