So I don't think they're too worried about becoming weakened and facing an invasion or anything. And as for the global economy: there hardly is one any more.
The point of the book is (a) to show us what the world will be like if we don't start sorting out our carbon output, and (b) to help us imagine a world where people take global warming really seriously (albeit too late). If you can imagine it, it's easier to do it. These goals, I think, are achieved very well.
I think the best thing is if we come back to this discussion once you've read the book . (I'm assuming you haven't, although I realised you haven't told me directly.) Otherwise we'll just be going round in circles.
