Fair enough. Though I'm pretty sure your second paragraph is wrong beetnemesis Send a noteboard - 31/07/2011 11:34:05 PM

Along the way, Harry and Bob figure out that Harry wasn't dead. So, later, when Uriel gave him the choice between continuing as a ghost operative and going into an unknown place, Harry knew that represented life. And he chose it, because he saw he had a lot to do. And when he did, Uriel did his final balancing act and told him he needn't be Mab's automaton.

I just reread the end of the book, with Harry and Uriel. It seems pretty clear that Harry DOESN'T know he's going to come back alive.

Here's what happens:

Harry realizes he had himself killed, everything freezes, Uriel shows up and explains stuff. Harry has a few options at this point:

1) He can stay on Earth as a ghost. However, he's incredibly weak, since he's used up most of his "essence" in the battle with Corpsetaker. He might be able to help, but he might not.

2) He can join Uriel's agency. Harry doesn't seem thrilled about that- Carmicheal and Captain Murphy didn't seem thrilled to be there.

3) He can go on to "What's next." Uriel refuses to explain beyond phrases like "accepting the consequences" and whatnot. It's heavily implied that "what's next" is the afterlife.

Then Harry demands to see his friends and daughter, to see if they'll be OK without him. Short answer, yes, they will. So he says goodbye to Mouse and his daughter, and tells Uriel he's ready to go.

Then... he wakes up in Mab's lap, every breath an agony, and is extremely surprised to be alive. Then there's Uriel's whisper saying that she can't take away his free will.

So, yeah- Harry seemed pretty certain he was off to the afterlife. We, the readers, knew that probably wasn't going to happen, and we had seen enough hints in the text that we were expecting something like this, but Harry himself didn't think that he was about to come back to life.
I amuse myself.
