Publishers are more interested in the bottom line.

It is my conviction that, ten years from now, publishers will point to Robert Jordan and to George Martin when they tell authors, "We're not accepting series longer than three or four books unless you have the whole thing finished. These long series have a way of getting bogged down and losing their way. Look at Jordan, look at Martin."
Publishers looking at those authors don't give a toss about bogging down, or losing their way. In fact, if the books are selling like hot cakes, they'd probably be happy for them to just do that, to wring a few more books and more money out of the readers.
When publishers point to Jordan and Martin now, let alone in ten years, they say, "These guys sell 4 million copies of each book they write. Do that and we'll be happy. Though preferably faster than once every five years."
