...why you feel this way.
... that atrocious piece of shit House of leaves ...
It has been several years since I read it. Maybe my grumpy insult was too strong. I picked the book up intrigued by the concept. I am not against mixing writing up or anything like that but two of the stories were long winded and boring from what I remember of it. The only interesting story was the one with the family in the house but even that began dragging on.
I can admit in full disclosure that I never finished it. I was about three quarters way through it when I returned it to the library. The amount I did get through was tedious reading at best and all the little quirks in it like the different color text, reading sideways became annoying after hundreds of pages, not inventive anymore. The only thing I do remember liking about it was the twist on the Minotaur story. Other than that, the format did not invoke in me any feelings of unease or existential terror. It probably invoked a lot of yawns.
I seriously would not recommend this book to anybody ever. I think the author takes himself way too seriously, so that he even becomes a sort of mockery of the very thing he is mocking, the structure of a novel. It was an interesting concept that just didn't turn out well.
But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...

A review that Danielewski fans in particular ought to read. One of my current favs for 2011.
