As for the scriber of that article, I must state that his predilection for mechanical pencils is the opinion of a madman. I will admit they are useful for technical drawings, but as an everyday tool they are beyond contempt.
My mechanical pencil has a good grip, feels comfortable in my hand, and is always sharp. I can't stand pencils that get even a little bit dull. A little is all it takes to make writing with it feel wrong. I prefer a pen over anything, but when I need a pencil I turn to my mechanical.
But I agree that writing in fiction books is wrong.
