But my sentiments about that are actually quite similar to yours about the book... the plot is almost simplistic, the characters very black and white, and you can see most plot twists coming from a mile away - and yet, it's kind of fun. Leslie Howard (of Gone With the Wind fame) and Merle Oberon fit the descriptions as you give them of the book rather well, and it seems like the adaptation is a very faithful one...
