Have you read any Dickens?

What have you read?

yes - great expectations, tale or two cities (only read... the first page...) and one other one, don't remember the name

Do you remember what it was about?
Why did you stop after the first page of Tale of Two Cities?

Have you heard of any (other) Dickens novels?

uh. sure? i tend to not think about them.

I see I should have phrased the question more clearly. Which ones have you heard of?

Why have you not read them?

boring, awful books.

How do you know?

What is your perception of Dickens?

horrid, terrible character development, horrible writing, boring ass descriptions. blech.

Have you seen any film/series versions of Dickens' novels?

no.

Pick one word that you connect with Dickens. What is it?

dread. also, dreary.

that is not to say i dislike other older english lit. i love jane austen, virginia woolf and whatnot. i adore shakespeare... i mostly dislike classics anyway, though. ofrom everywhere. i hated moby dick. fully boring. it's why i wasn't an english major. i adore books and writing and whatnot. i have a ba in creative writing and a minor in latin american literature and culture... and one in linguistics. and an ma in ling. i studied old and middle english, old irish and old norse. i adore the ancient stories and tales and everything of that age. :) anyway.... yeah. i guess i'm not helping your class designing. though maybe you can figure out how to make dickens less terrible for your students. though i figure if you're teaching at a uni they actually want to take the course?
