Have you read any Dickens?
I have not. I do own a copy of Oliver Twist though.
What have you read?
Have you heard of any (other) Dickens novels?
Just so. A Christmas Carol of course, everyone knows that one. At the moment I can also think of Bleak House, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield, Nicholas Nickleby, Hard Times, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
Why have you not read them?
They're not high enough on my priority list given my limited reading time. I have some interest in them given that they're classics, but not enough to get past that first thing. I was never given any as assigned reading in any classes, including several first and second year university English literature classes.
I sympathise. I think a lot of teachers are hesitant about putting the good Dickens stuff on reading lists simply because they are so long. People keep reading A Christmas Carol, but not all that many others.
What is your perception of Dickens?
Wordy, likely because of how he wrote and was paid for the books. Lots of characters. And for some reason I think of chimney sweepers.
When you say you know how he was paid, what do you mean?
I don't know where the chimney sweepers comes from.
Have you seen any film/series versions of Dickens' novels?
Multiple versionf of A Christmas Carol, and one version of Oliver Twist.
Pick one word that you connect with Dickens. What is it?
Chimney sweepers.
Interesting.
