I think it was written to accomplish a goal and it did that very well

The audience for the book was whites who she wanted to see the gross injustice that was taking place when a black man was accused of a crime a against a white woman. If anything this book downs plays how bad it was for black men accussed of a sex crime back them and he was lucky to even get a trial. If the book had been written form the point of view of a young poor black girl I am sure it would have been a very different story but I doubt young white children would have identified with it as much. It might have been more honest to throw in some drunk black men but I don't think it would have made it a better story. It would not have made sense to have her experience any overt racism since I suspect the white daughter of a respected lawyer would have been shielded from any such unpleasantness.

As you noted, though, it's a fuller depiction of the South than "racist people."

I don't know, if a lot of people want to have this book in a Book Club, I have no objections.

One of my nieces didn't like it. I think it was because she was forced to read it for school.
