I think a good rule of thumb is to think of it as being "realistic" but with one or two little changes. Like The Time Traveller's Wife or Groundhog Day.

I am going to read the summer tree because I own it. I've decided it's spec fic because "normal" people are in it. Or something. So like what you said, only more made up stuff rather than less.
