Half-Dozen Challenge:
Read one Sci-fi, one Fantasy and one Spec Fic book (i.e. three separate books, and they can be books you've read before, if you like).
I haven't really decided yet. I suppose I'll count Lies of Locke Lamora as spec fic. And I have been meaning to read Larry Niven's Ringworld, so that is sci fi. Fantasy... I'll leave that to fate. Maybe I can fit Mapa del tiempo or whatever it was called into the spec fic category, and shift Locke Lamora into fantasy. Time will tell.
Extra challenge for May and June: review one of the three books and share your review on the board.
I keep meaning to write reviews. But I also feel guilty whenever I am taking time to write anything lengthy these days if it is not my phd.
Genre Challenge
Quite simply, just read one book from each of the genres below before the year is out. Rereads are allowed; it's up to you whether you choose all new books or not. I probably won't.
- Historical Fiction/Alternative History
Done: Quicksilver
- Western
I have a plan.
- Horror
Done: Pretty Monsters
- Mystery/Crime
Done: Murder of Roger Ackroyd
- (Auto-) Biography
I am reading several, but I haven't finished any of them yet.
- History
I think I am currently reading three of them. I suppose I will finish one soon.
- Family chronicle
Done: Brideshead Revisited (although I may find one that fits better later in the year)
- Allegory/parody/satire
Done: lots of Pratchett and Heart of a Dog.
- Surrealist novel
Not sure which one to pick here. I'm sure something will come along.
- Extra option for those who can: a novel in a foreign language
Currently reading two, and if I end up with Mapa del Tiempo for one of the categories this month, that will tick this box.
Are you on track for your 50 Book Challenge (or however many you chose)?
Yes.
And have you managed to read the book you've been meaning to read for ages? If so, what was it, and will you review it for us?
Hehehe. No. I had completely forgotten about that. I am not 100 % sure this will happen.

I figure the idea is "spec fic" covers everything that's, well, spec fic, without being fantasy / SF

I'd have to agree with Rebekah that e.g. The Time Traveller's Wife qualifies.
