I've been thinking of tackling a book in German for a while, and this seems like an excellent candidate.
First I'm going to work my way through most of Steinbeck's novels. Around 12-15 years old, I read The Pearl, Of Mice and Men, and Grapes of Wrath. I was not a fan at all, I think because I was too young and didn't want to appreciate the darker side of human nature. I didn't see much art in portraying that. Now I'm reading East of Eden, and I love it, but I'm sure if it's different from the rest of Steinbeck's work or if I've just changed enough to understand him better.
Anyway, rambling, but it's always fascinating to reread mature books you enjoyed (or didn't) at a relatively young age.

I find Steinbeck hard to digest.

He can also be inconsistent, but that makes him interesting to me.
