It's only superficially postmodern though, else there'd be no wistfulness for Victorian styles. Joel Send a noteboard - 22/04/2011 03:17:38 PM
As far as a "reasonable reason for its anachronistic presence", there isn't one, and according roughly to postmodern precepts, there needn't be. The only criterion they use if it looks cool or not. The lack of "reasonable reason" should indicate that it's postmodernism doing the appropriating, not the other way around. It's not terribly deep, but I'm not arguing that and I'm not concerned with depth.
It just feels a little off to me, most of the time, when we aren't given a reasonable reason for its anachronistic presence. I mean, if I went to Lascaux and saw paintings of cave men tooling around in a '57 Chevy my first reaction wouldn't be "how imaginative". :P

Most steampunk I've seen not only accepts but celebrates Victorian norms and styles in a way not postmodern at all, and especially glaring since postmodernism was born as a rejection of the Victorian Age from the superficial down to the most fundamental level. Rejecting modern mores and principles as inadequate and false is very postmodern--unless one affirms older mores and principles in their place; that's just nostalgia. I tried to avoid calling it "escapism", but now escapism is being argued as a virtue, leading me to again wonder if it's not as simple whistling in the dark because the future is scary.

I remain dubious of debating whether algebra is better than math, but the arguments here suggest any comparison must be aesthetic because steampunk is only aesthetics. I'm somewhat dubious of that as well, but if we must debate which is better, that ought to decide the matter. We can question past or present values, or assert value itself as subjective and independent of era, but trading one set of superficial empty values for another is nihilist absurdism not only lacking but denying depth. What can I say? I'm too old to be content with looking cool, but if that's all we're doing I'm definitely too old to debate which fad is best. At the risk of more postmodernism, I think we should look for meaning almost anywhere, whether as readers or authors.

Why I prefer cyberpunk in near future settings to (most) of the steampunk sub-genre. - 19/04/2011 10:55:57 PM 1321 Views
The difference is that steampunk, by and large, is very aware of its implausibility. - 20/04/2011 01:32:57 AM 886 Views
I think it's just a matter of two separate genres that share very similar names and perhaps origins. - 20/04/2011 01:32:50 AM 1039 Views
It's hard to argue that the genres are separate, but I did try to avoid suggesting a competition. - 20/04/2011 03:08:49 AM 1069 Views
Ok, what are you trying to argue for and/or explore in this thread? There are three options: - 20/04/2011 04:22:52 AM 955 Views
It is under-appreciated critically, largely due to relative unpopularity. - 20/04/2011 06:35:27 AM 1142 Views
"Victorian Postmodernism" is viable because Postmodernism can appropriate other periods and styles. - 21/04/2011 01:13:45 AM 993 Views
But can other periods and styles appropriate postmodernism? - 21/04/2011 07:38:29 PM 1046 Views
I don't think it's a two-way street in that manner. It's PoMo appropriating Victorian not vice versa - 21/04/2011 11:40:29 PM 1042 Views

IMO, cyberpunk has become somewhat dated. - 20/04/2011 04:46:55 AM 1118 Views
Actually, I can live with that, though terms like "dated" invite trouble. - 20/04/2011 07:01:50 AM 975 Views

No, I took your point. - 22/04/2011 03:43:18 PM 1138 Views
so...is bladerunner cyberpunk - 20/04/2011 09:48:15 PM 826 Views
It's usually seen as the archetypal cyberpunk film, yeah. - 21/04/2011 10:50:44 AM 1163 Views
