Valyria is on the maps in A STORM OF SWORDS Werthead Send a noteboard - 08/04/2011 09:47:50 AM
Valyria is just southeast of the Free Cities, on the southern coast of Essos. It is between the Free cities and Slaver's Bay.

But the Peninsula that used to be Valyria (think of something similar to Italy jutting out from the southern part of Europe), experienced a cataclysmic volcanic event 400 years before the present, and as a result most of it was submerged below the sea. The parts that remain are now islands just south of the continent of Essos.

Valyria isn't quite 'just southeast' of the Free Cities. There's a significant amount of territory between the two regions. Dany says, "Thousands and thousands of leagues," in ASoS but that's probably hyperbole. But I'd imagine a good couple of thousand miles at least, given how long it takes info to get to and from Slaver's Bay from Westeros and how much is corrupted along the way. We should get a definite answer on this in ADWD, since at least two storylines involve that geographic area.

I think the name is very fitting, and hints at an ancient "First Language" that named all continents - 07/04/2011 07:54:13 PM 872 Views
"Sothoryos" does sound kinda cool, I'll admit. - 07/04/2011 07:59:53 PM 1197 Views
