I found it enjoyable (although somewhat lacking in quality), but I don't think I had read any fantasy besides Jordan and Tolkien by then. I don't plan to read anything else by Eddings.
I don't think he's really for grown ups, except those who read his books first when quite young, so you're not missing out.
