I think my experience of it was the same as yours, so I suspect it's more non-Catholic as opposed to Atheist.


Quite possibly. I think anyone who does not see embracing catholicism as an unqualified good will feel a little unhappy about the ending.

I am not terribly surprised I did not remember Aloysius from the first time I read it, though. From your descriptions I had expected him to be much more central (hence my budding doubts about whether I had actually read the book, after all). But he is lovely.
