I suppose you would describe it as omniscient narrative that is narrowly focalised. But it has been a while since I spent time on that sort of analysis. I'll think on it if you really want to know.
Yes please! It is driving me crazy lol
I think my original description would be the normal one. It is normal to distinguish between the narrator per se (the voice actually telling the story), and the focalising through a character. Think of it as a camera. An omniscient narrator can either give you a wide shot or focus through the position of one of the characters -- or, indeed, skip from one to the other.
I tend to like that sort of writing. If it is done well.
Really? I'm trying to think of a book that uses this type of narration. Just so we are on the same page, here is an example of what I'm talking about:
Dan couldn't believe his luck. Susan, the hottest woman in the office, was talking to him! "Yes, I did see that movie. I wouldn't mind seeing it again, though. Do you want to go?"
Susan sized Dan up, noting his scruffy beard and unwashed hair. She would rather vomit than go on a date with this man."No thanks," she said sweetly.
So you see how the POV changed? That's the style I'm talking about. I find it kind of annoying because I like the story to stick to one character at a time.
It is done rather abruptly and inexpertly here, I would say; but that does not mean the technique itself is inherently bad. Thinking of examples is one of my weaknesses, so I won't even try. But it is not a technique I would be surprised to find in a modernist novel, for example.

It's sloppy. I can't imagine that the result is good.
