Pretty much anything by Neil Gaiman, esp. Good Omens (w/Pratchett). More recommendations inside ...

The Banned and the Banished novel series by James Clemens is pretty good. A dark/epic fantasy with a twisted ending.
The Cycle of Fire trilogy by Janny Wurts.
I would recommend her "The Wars of Light and Shadow" series but many find it exhausting to read as it gets pretty verbose and lengthy. Also it hasn't finished even after 8 books.
Otherland quadrology (sci-fi) by Tad Williams.
Shadowmarch quadrology is also excellent.
The Snow Queen Cycle by Joan D. Vinge is very good sci-fi read.
The Demon Wars saga by R.A. Salvatore was pretty good.
The Runelords series by David Farland.
Starfish by Peter Watts. Awesome sci-fi thriller. The sequels were pretty decent as well. (Rifters trilogy)
Horizon War trilogy by Robert Weinberg (Mage the Ascension/ World of Darkness book)
"The Warrior's Tale" & "The Warrior Returns" by Allan Cole - both are part of the Anteros series but do not require you to read the preceding books. The first is a fun lesbian feminist romp about a group of women warriors who battle wizards, demons, pirates and sexism on land and at sea. The 2nd book brings our heroine back for one last adventure.
The Necroscope series by Brian Lumley - sci-fi horror that redefines vampires (Wampyrie) into alien parasites from a parallel dimension. Protagonist is Harry Keogh, the Necroscope, a man born with the ability to speak with the dead.

The question is not what you have read, but what you enjoyed reading...

Have you read Foucault's Pendulum? That's been translated into English.

I've been looking for a hardcover edition of Là-Bas in French.

I get the sense that would be very expensive if found

Might as well ask American publishers where the obsession with hardcovers comes from.

Don't libraries as a rule have hardcovers?

I think you have two different questions there

Yes, but those are matters of what one is used to, like I said.
