My parents gave me a Nook for Christmas, and I'm using it instead of my PRS-505. The Sony software on the PC was really irritating to use; it reminded me of iTunes, but it was far less functional and a lot more irritating. No renaming filenames, or anything. Have they improved that recently, or does the Sony software still suck?
Before I ever got my Sony, I saw multiple reviews telling people to use Calibre, not the Sony software. It was a few weeks after I got my Reader before I even installed the Reader software, and that was just so I could buy a few books from the Reader store.
I was amazed that you couldn't rename files. I was sure I was missing something. That seems like such a beyond basic feature to me.
Maybe they have changed things since you used it last. But if this is an improved version of the software, that's even more pathetic.
*EDIT* There is one good thing about Sony's software. For some reason, Calibre can't convert docx (and probably doc) files. You have to save the file as html (or maybe rtf) for Calibre to handle it. The Sony software automatically converts any Word format when you put it on your Reader. In the few I've done, nothing is lost in the formatting either, though I haven't tried any graphic- or table- heavy documents.

Just make sure you look at your library's Online selection first.

Which is more irritating, bookshelves taking up space or running out of batteries while reading?

I was sure that the best I could ever do was tolerate ereaders.
