Re: Perhaps, haven't read either Dunsany or Peake. Camilla Send a noteboard - 23/01/2011 02:05:31 PM
Although not really.

Dunsany is probably a better fit than Peake.

So I'll take your word for this. ;)

I assume you refer to Tolkien. I have noticed that people have a tendency to call books classics at a much younger age when it comes to genre literature, though. If you follow that trend, there will be more than the one.

Will there really, though? I don't see too many candidates. Some books or series that will stand out as superior examples of high fantasy - Earthsea (no, haven't read that either), Amber, arguably Fionavar Tapestry, some others - but I don't think any of them can seriously be called a "classic". And while a book like e.g. Dune might come closer to that status, you can hardly call it high fantasy what with all the science fiction elements.

Yes. That is in part what I meant. You get something called "genre classics" which are books not really able to stand on their own as simply "classics", but which are "classics" within a given genre. Perhaps that is just how I see things.

There's really only one high fantasy classic, no? Or two, if you count the Silm separately. *NM* - 23/01/2011 01:35:03 PM 477 Views
Perhaps Gormenghast? - 23/01/2011 01:58:50 PM 1129 Views
