Emma didn't try to transcend her world. She tried to escape it. And she failed. Miserably.

I would disagree with Baudelaire's contention, and quite emphatically. Emma cannot be happy because the prerequisites for her happiness are non-existent. The disposition that Flaubert ascribes to Emma is one that will never be happy, because she needs novelty combined with luxury and extravagance. Even had she married a nobleman, she would have become bored with him, and quickly. Perhaps if she married Napoleon Bonaparte in the days of Napoleon, she MIGHT have been happy for a longer time, but as soon as he failed she would have held him in contempt. Also, given how pathetic and needy she is, it is unlikely that the sort of decisive man she seeks would give her the time of day (and indeed, they don't).
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

Yeah, I think it's safe to say some of those words would give even native speakers pause.

I want to read two more "serious" works before skipping over to Druon.

Never beats the reader across the head, eh? So what do you make of the ending?

The ending fits with the rest of the book, I believe

Hm. I think maybe it's because you've read the book before, as Tom admitted.
