Lynn is a new discovery for me this year, and I've read everything she's written so far. Her fantasies are all based in the same world, in two series. The second, the Nightrunner series, is slash fantasy- my fave!- and is very character driven, something I love as well.
4. Lord of Snow and Shadows- Sarah Ash
5. Prisoner of the Iron Tower- Sarah Ash
My second (this month actually) discovery this year. This series, of which I have yet to read the third, is more story-driven than Flewelling's, but still have great characters. It's exciting and thoughtful fantasy.
6. Shadowdance- Robin Wayne Bailey
A book about a cripple (a gay cripple, even better yay!) given the opportunity to dance- but at a high cost.
7. Drawing Blood- Poppy Z. Brite
Another slash, this one horror/ fiction, about a boy discovering himself in the memories of his family's brutal murder.
8. Heroes Die- Matthew Woodring Stover
I'm sorry I didn't read this before. Very thought-provoking science fantasy that went surprisingly fast for how dense it was.
I'd say those are the top, as far as what I feel like sharing with this message board.
