I went into my local bookstore and SF author Neal Asher was just randomly there. Not having read his books before I briefly spoke to him and agreed to give GRIDLINKED a try (still haven't gotten round to reading it, although I've tried a couple of his other books in the interim and they were okay). He definitely looked irked. We spent 15 minutes talking, along with the store's SF buyer, and not one other person showed any interest in him or his books whilst we were there.
Has anybody ever felt sorry for these authors at book signings?

None of the bookstores I've been in have ever had a signing when I've been around. *NM*

Ever heard George R.R. Martin's story about a signing in the 1990s in the St. Louis area?
