It can get, well, melodramatic, overly sentimental at times.
I personally liked Tigana the first time I read it, but I could not stomach it the second because the whole emotional shebang got too much for me to read through again.
I prefer The Lions of Al-Rassan, and I am reading good things about his latest (Under Heaven? Something like that). I do think you should try Lions, because I loved it, and some of his other series work quite well, too.
