It as ridicules as when college kids were going around talking about how much they hated Barney. All I could think was "why the hell are you watching it".
It is funny that a lot of the people who deeply hate Brown enjoy other poorly written mass market crap. Hell most of fantasy and scfi is poorly written pulp. Harry Potter sucked. The vampire books that are so popular these days suck. You don't read genre fiction for the amazing prose and you can't compare it to the classics.
Some times you find a writer who is very good and whose writing you like. Sometimes they even have complex characters, interact plots and even more rarely layers of nuance. The thing is I don’t always want to read a book that I need to read through three or four times to catch everything the writer is doing, sometimes I just want fluff.
I don't like his style of writing or that type of book so I don't read it. I find the Harry Potter books shallow and childish so I don't read them. But hey I watch True Blood and used to read comic books so who am I to judge.

Why is it that so many people hate Dan Brown?

It's not any worse than Robert Jordan's prose. I'd say it's better, in fact.
