I agree with what you said, however I don't like the better authors remark.
Defining better depends on what the purpose was. If the purpose was to write a very succesful book that entertains millions, then he's one of the best. And i'm pretty sure that's exactly what he set out to do since he writes airport novels, easy to pick up, easy to get into, easy to finish.
If the purpose was to create some historical document (which it's not, it's fiction ffs people!), he sucks and others are better. If the purpose was to put together a wonderful piece of literature demonstrating the beauty of the english language (which it's most certainly not), he sucks and others are better.
