Donna Leon's Commasario Brunetti series. Set in Venice. Gentle detection Venetian-style. Cannot be too highly recommended.

Martin O'Brien's Jacquot series - village cop in France. Very good and has a bit of romance as well. First three books. Only get hermore if she cries for them as they get a bit more gory. Third book - Jacquot and the Angel - is wonderful

Colin Cotterill - Dr. Siri series. The tales of the unwilling National Coroner of Laos. Very funny in places, and devoured by all the women in my tribe.

Martin Walker - the Bruno, Chief of Police, series. Three so far. France again and very well written.

And, if she wants the very best, Peter Temple. His Jack Irish books are delightful, if a bit naughty in places. His prize-winners are "The Broken Shore" and "Truth". Serious serious detective fiction with a literary edge.
