I've finished the book (finally), and it made me cry. I think from about 2/3 through the main characters become more real, more emotive, and the book hurt a lot.

I think the initial feeling I had was because I knew the overall story and I didn't want to feel sad about it. (Ishiguro's writing is too beautiful for sadness.) But as I'd forgotten the details, I wasn't quite prepared for how sad, heartbreaking and horrible it all is.

That is essentially how I felt. About halfway through the novel, I realized I had somehow started to care about the characters (even Ruth). I think the way Ishiguro writes has a lot to do with it; it's emotive, it's beautiful and it captivates my love of language.

I was caught up in this book and I simply loved it.
