It's basically the Communist Manifesto in novel form. Steinbeck takes a fictional family and just keeps heaping on humiliation and exploitation onto them. It's far too melodramatic for my taste, as well.
But in keeping with my rather accidental tradition, I haven't read this most famous of his novels. Maybe I should just avoid it and save my feeling for the man?
My friend's sister let me borrow The Grapes of Wrath. It's not my niche.
