I think you underestimate the number of translations of the Bible. Ghavrel Send a noteboard - 09/11/2010 01:20:30 AM
Also, what people claim are "shelves full of Bibles" are typically shelves full of Bibles and Biblical commentary, which as you know is fairly extensive (and exhaustive). :P

But still, various translations alone bring up the number considerably. You have the King James, of course, and the New King James, and the American Standard, and the New American Standard, and the New American Standard Revised (je t'adore), and the New International Version (je te deteste), and the Living Word Translation (words do not describe), and that's just off of the top of my head. There are countless modernizations, each more unfortunate than the next.

LET'S HAVE AN EXAMPLE, SHALL WE? Here's a passage from the New American Standard Bible (John 1:9-14):

There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.

He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become (children of God, even to those who believe in His name,

who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

And from... "The Message." Ugh.

The Life-Light was the real thing:
Every person entering Life
he brings into Light.
He was in the world,
the world was there through him,
and yet the world didn't even notice.
He came to his own people,
but they didn't want him.
But whoever did want him,
who believed he was who he claimed
and would do what he said,
He made to be their true selves,
their child-of-God selves.
These are the God-begotten,
not blood-begotten,
not flesh-begotten,
not sex-begotten.

The Word became flesh and blood,
and moved into the neighborhood.
We saw the glory with our own eyes,
the one-of-a-kind glory,
like Father, like Son,
Generous inside and out,
true from start to finish.

Point being... there is a lot of variation.
"We feel safe when we read what we recognise, what does not challenge our way of thinking.... a steady acceptance of pre-arranged patterns leads to the inability to question what we are told."

Umm...I care? - 09/11/2010 08:42:55 PM 912 Views
Because you should care about being intelligent, rather than appearing to be intelligent. - 09/11/2010 10:32:04 PM 949 Views
Again, why would I care? - 09/11/2010 10:38:21 PM 966 Views
No one can make you care about being decent, or intelligent, or a viable member of the community. - 09/11/2010 10:41:34 PM 869 Views
I think it's rather pointless, to be honest. - 09/11/2010 10:54:17 PM 901 Views
Then why are you even here? - 09/11/2010 10:59:49 PM 845 Views
I don't know. I thought I'd see how long I could string you along. - 09/11/2010 11:00:37 PM 779 Views
You're the one who doesn't care. - 09/11/2010 11:02:11 PM 822 Views
I care only as much as I care. What others think is irrelevant to that. - 09/11/2010 11:04:15 PM 836 Views

I'm not going to. I find this entertaining. - 09/11/2010 11:12:27 PM 864 Views
