While most people (I guess) know Lawhead for his Pendragon cycle, and while I consider his singular work Byzantium to be his (to date) Magnum Opus, I did enjoy the trilogy.

Of course, I'm old school- having read this when it was first published (and before even the Wheel of Time), back in 1992.

Lawhead, at his prime, was very descriptive - and, to me, was able to catch an appropriate level of emotive description and character growth. For this series, I specifically remember being transfixed - right on through the end.

In general, though, I'd somewhat compare this to a Robin Hobbs-esque series: relatively slow and descriptive compared to some of the more action oriented series out there, but rewarding to the reader.
