If it is something like We need to talk about Kevin, then I may go online or for a walk, or pretty much anything.
If it scares me and is liable to give me nightmares, I watch a happy film or series.
What I never do directly after a book that has made a strong impression is pick up another. The second book always gets somewhat tainted by the one I have just read.
