I'm actually in a steampunk trend right now...

I just finished The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray by Chris Wooding. It wasn't a bad novel; more along the lines of YA. Basically it's about an alternate Victorian London that is becoming overrun with demonic creatures, or "wychkin". Thaniel is a wych-hunter, which as the name suggests is a type of bounty hunter contracted to eliminate these creatures. One evening he stumbles upon young Alaizabel Cray and is dragged into saving London from secret societies and a magical coup d'etat.
It was a fun read, but the writing was geared for the YA audience.
I've just started The Alchemy of Stone by E. Sedia, which is quite promising. I'm only two chapters in, but this society has three separate factions: the Gargoyles, the Mechanics, and the Alchemists.
Once I've finished the book I'll let you know how it was.
Also on my steampunk docket are Soulless, The Affinity Bridge by George Mann, and Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin.

It's apparently Steampunk month. Or fortnight, depending on which publisher you look at.

And some enthusiast is apparently trying to build Babbage's original designs for a computer.

The Science Museum did one of Babbage's machines, yes, but not the big one.

It would seem The Difference Engine is essential Steampunk reading; it largely spawned the genre.

Not high art, maybe, but well written, well paced and thought provoking.
