I think you would like Sharon Penman very much. I have read Here Be Dragons and The Sunne in Splendour. Both are excellent, very long and you have to pay attention. Great value for money

Another I love is actually a child/young adult book, but it's wonderful. It's called A Traveller in Time by Alison Uttley.
