Astrid Lindgren wrote amazing childrens books. I don't know if they are widely available in english, but if they are, they are definately worth a shot.
I hadn't heard of the others until I met Scandanavian types, so I'm not sure how available they are.
That reminds me (though I don't exactly know why) that "From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" is fantastic too.
