Honestly, very good book -- but I read it years ago, so won't contribute much. There is an indie movie out about it now, but the movie isn't as good. It would be hard to translate it to film anyway, but they don't do a good job of teasing the mystery out of it. I understood Ruth, she was very confused, and reacted in a confused manner. I didn't enjoy "The Remains of the Day" as much, but found it to be similar and to also have some wonderfully subtle passages. Also, I wish I had a cool name so I could be a big time author.
I cannot even copy his manner because the manner of his prose was the manner of his thinking and that was a dazzling succession of gaps; and you cannot ape a gap because you are bound to fill it in somehow or other -- and blot it out in the process. -- Nabokov

I have just discovered that I loaned the book to someone recently as well.

Might as well start with this - what did you think of Ishiguro's subtle treatment of the key issue?

I may not be all that good in figuring such things out, but it wasn't so evident to me at all.

What did you think of the characters?

I find it difficult to sympathise with these characters and I wonder whether that's deliberate.

Since Chas is making me wonder... What did you think of the book? Like it, love it, hate it? *NM*

And I'm officially overusing the phrase "what did you think". *NM*

Crap. I hope I didn't come across as too negative, because I loved the book.

I liked it (with some exceptions)

I thought of The Island, too - same premise, very different approach.

Right. A better answer, now that I've got the book and have refreshed my memory.

Did you just compare Robert Jordan's writing style favourably to Ishiguro's?
