You people who own one: did environmental considerations come into play when you bought yours?
Yes and no. Not so much for the whole "paper books take up a lot of trees" thing, but I did think it would be handy to have something to read the billions of pdfs for my class on rather than printing them all out. I was very excited about this, as my reader lets me annotate and highlight and such, but the screen is a tad small and while I can zoom, that's making things slower. So while I am still printing things, I am working on reading them on the reader. That was long-winded.
Would an e-Reader be better for the environemnt? Obviously fewer forests need to be chopped down, which is lovely for the air, but how green are the components?
The components themselves are honestly probably not all that green, but hopefully they will last a long time. Unfortunately, it's probably more likely that people will continue to buy the newest and prettiest model, thus using lots more resources. But yes, in theory, it can save a lot of paper and processing costs.
I'm almost ready to demand one for a present, and (honestly) apart from the functional aspect of having loads of books in a small space, the green factor is really the deciding point for me.
I'm having fun with mine. I'm not ready to get rid of my physical books yet, but I like having this around. I have the Sony Daily Edition, for what it's worth.

Your statement about forests shows you don't know about modern forestry

I'm not going to make the obvious comments in response to the phrase "native bush".

You can't read on an iPad any more than you can read on a laptop. *NM*
