Wanna bet? Larry Send a noteboard - 13/09/2009 08:23:14 AM
Robin Hobb is great, I'm not descriminating, but most of the books that are recommended or read by fantasy readers are male authors. I love Robin Hobbs things, and other people apparently like Anne McAffrey, god knows why. But I think the discussion of female authors on here is directly proportional to the amount of female fantasy authors out there.

Look at the NY Times Bestsellers List. Note the number of urban fantasies and paranormal romance fantasies on that list. Note that virtually all of them are by female authors such as Patricia Briggs (whose graphic novel prequel, Mercy Thompson: Homecoming, was quite good), Charlaine Harris, the ever-popular Stephanie Meyer, etc.

Considering that close to 2/3 of the review copies I get from publishers are for urban fantasies and that the vast majority of writers for those type of fantasies are women, I'd have to say that for non-epic fantasies, female authors (and readers) are driving the market right now.
