True Larry Send a noteboard - 13/09/2009 08:15:02 AM
I wouldn't pin too much hopes on Book Clubs for generating discussions. I think the point of my post was overlooked to a degree - that being that 1) I noticed something that I've been working actively for months to address in my own reading, 2) I want to have a conversation or three about this here at some point in time.

I know, their history doesn't make it too promising. :P But "optimism is a moral duty" and all that. ;)

But seriously, if the point of your post was only the gender of the authors discussed, then I have to say, female authors like Hobb, Wurts, Rawn, Elliot, Carey, Friedman, Zimmer Bradley, Rowling, Atwood,... have been mentioned and discussed on this board so far. If male authors were discussed a lot more, well, that's because male authors dominate the genres that are most popular here, and to increase the amount of female authors read would require either reading different genres or niches, or some kind of "positive discrimination" in your reading. As you are apparently doing yourself.

But yet in the wider "conversation" going on in SF/F circles, the female authors have become quite a bit more "important," I suppose one could say, in recent years and there's some interesting stuff transpiring in the short fiction and cross-genre areas that isn't getting much coverage on epic fantasy-dominated boards. You know me; I like to stir interest in the not-so-ubiquitious authors from time to time :P And if it's "positive discrimination" (doubtful, considering that while I have read books written or co-edited by around 50 women this year, that's less than 20% of my total reading so far this year), then I'm glad I've decided to do it, since I've discovered some interesting takes on how to tell stories and such :D
