Re: Fudge, Hermione, Neville, Cho, Harry, Umbridge, the teachers, Snape, Dumbledore
Camilla Send a noteboard - 04/10/2010 09:18:42 PM
I think she just said that "if we sign this, we agree not to tell anyone". I think "if you tell anyone, your face will be horribly disfigured" would have had a good preventive effect.
First, I agree, tricking people into this was not cool. However, they probably should have handled the whole recruiting thing differently. I mean, inviting everyone there to talk it over set them up to have a problem if certain people didn't join. If they had the option, would that girl have signed up? Not likely. Neither would Zacharias Smith or some of the other whinier members of the DA. They're in a difficult position either way.
She could have told them after they signed. My point is that there is no point having a horrible curse if people do not know about it: it is not a deterrent.
Neville: I like the effect of the break-out on him. Again, because he has been set up as slow to control magic, the change is so powerful. It is especially interesting in view of the earlier theory that the reason he has trouble with magic is that he has developed some block as a result of the trauma of what happened to his parents. If so, the possibility of being able to fight the Lestranges makes even more sense as a catalyst.
He is growing quite rapidly here. I like it.

Indeed.
I love Neville. He makes great strides here and in the next two books. Definitely one of the best of the school age characters.
Harry: Are teenage boys really that clueless? I feel I should be protesting an unfair stereotype, but then I realised I don't know whether it is accurate or not.
Hm. I think *all* boys are that clueless.

Not mine

You own a teenage boy?!?!

No, you will notice I was replying to the claim that all boys are like that. Mine is no longer a teenager.
Yes. But I cannot help feel that she is more astute than Fudge. I really don't know. I don't know whether it is even something that concerns here. I suspect her one criteria is whether someone supports the Minister or opposes him. The right and wrongs of the situation would probably not enter into it. Especially considering how she acts in Deathly Hollows.
I don't think she cares if he's telling the truth. Definitely agree with you here. Her aims are to further the ministry and protect it from destabilizing influence (even if that is from a 15 y/o telling the truth).
The teachers: I think this is what I love the most about this book. The conspiratorial side to the teachers. Here exemplified by the showering Harry in points and candy after the interview. It makes me happy when the teachers band together with the students against a common enemy. Especially when that enemy is Umbridge. Especially Trelawny's prediction that Harry would not die. I love it
(incidentally, her final prediction is also a true one -- with the possible exception for the exact number of children).

It's pretty awesome. They did the same thing to Lockhart in book 2.
This is definitely a great parallel with Lockhart, though they must hate Umbridge an awful lot more. Sets up nicely how they treat her when the twins run amuck at the school. Also, that was one of the best scenes for Trelwany, though I love her casual (and usually correct) foretellings while wandering around the halls.
True.
Snape: His memories. I like this scene. It gives the first bit of insight into his background. I wonder whether the girl who is laughing as the scrawny boy is trying to mount the broomstick is someone we know ... Lilly has a tendency to pop up before Snape reacts, and that is the last memory before he stops it.
His reactions really point to him wanting Harry to learn. The fact that he gets the most angry from proof that the link to Voldemort is as strong as ever ...
Yeah, as readers we can tell that he wants Harry to learn, but I can see from Harry's point of view where the mistrust/hate/anger/whateveryouwanttocallit comes from. Doesn't stop me wanting him to practice more, though.
This is something Rowling does pretty well, with characters operating under false assumptions and half truths, largely at their own expense. Snape is the largest example of it, for his entire story line, and he impacts SO many of the "good guys" along the way. Really, him operating under half of the prophecy causes the whole story to begin with. This is a great scene into his past and heading towards an explanation of his immediate mistreatment of Harry.
Indeed.
Agree about Harry. Put aside the anger and try to figure something out. This is important enough that Dumbledore wants you to work with someone he knows you have trouble with. Hermoine's more pragmatic view is a much better one here.
I also love (no, I don't think "love" is too strong a word) how he handles the scene in his office. Telling Harry to lie outright and tricking and plotting -- it is beautiful. I like this ability to see the need for cheating. And how he does not hesitate to sacrifice himself in order to keep Harry in school, and how he dismisses the idea of being sent to Azkaban. The complete rejection of following the rules. Lovely, lovely, lovely.
And Harry's shock when he realizes what Dumbledore is telling him to do. It's more direct communication than he's had from Dumbledore in nearly the whole book so far, too. Which admittedly is not much.
Yes. And again, no eye contact. I like the description of it. Telling things to Harry's knee, for example.
I love the dismisal of Azkaban as well and that he just difuses (at least somewhat) the situation for the actual members of the DA. My one problem with this scene is Kingsley's Imperius on the sneak. I know it's the least of the unforgiveable curses, but they've been leacturing for books about how the good guys should never ever use them. Except when convenient, I suppose.
I thought it was just a memory charm. I see no reason to Imperius her when he could just modify her memory.
I think it was mentioned somewhere when we started discussing Nigellus.
Yes, he has some funny one-liners about the teens in this one as well. Good way to close out that scene.
