Taking a step back from the novel itself, there are no happy endings in WH40K as a whole. For me as many other readers out there, this is a (perhaps depressing) comment on just how bored we've become with the predictable happy ending. Werthead, I don't know if you're read them or not, but the ending to The Last Chancers is one of the most memorable I've read in a long time.
Maybe 'positive ending' would be more accurate. The WH40K universe is indeed not pleasant, but the previous GG novels have always had the Ghosts being victorious and achieving their objectives (if at a cost). This book doesn't really have that (the next one, which I have finished and will review soon, doesn't either).
