Asimov, Bradbury, Heinlein, Clark, Dick ... I've never read any works by any of these authors. The idea is intriguing. Is it worth it, or is all their work terribly dated? Where should I start? Is there someone else you would include in a list of "classic science fiction?"

Heinlein is one of my all time favorites. You can make an argument for his work being dated, but I don't personally agree. Sometimes I have to keep in mind what boundaries Heinlein was trying to push when he wrote, but I still think he's brilliant.
I would start Heinlein with The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. If you don't like that one, you probably won't like Heinlein. Friday is also a favorite.
Heinlein writes really great female characters, they are strong and sassy. He really adored his wife and it shows in the women in his literature.
