The American Civil War by John Keegan
Not read it yet so I can't tell you if it is good
He is a very good military historian - he's the Defence Correspondent at the Daily Telegraph and a bit right wing for my tastes in his actual opinions (he is a big fan of the Iraq war and thinks political solutions are over rated compared to going in shooting) but really knows his stuff.

Killer Angels was good even if technically it is fiction

It was excellent, and the basis for the film "Gettysburg" The author's son wrote a prequel & sequel
