Re: Yule Ball, preparation and aftermath Legolas Send a noteboard - 24/08/2010 02:18:04 PM
I really am astonished at how well these divisions into three chapters a day seem to fit with the divisions within the novel. Then again, it may be that the threads over those three chapters are more clearly obvious because we are reading them together.

I know! Maybe Rowling really did write this book with the idea of having three chapters at a time. Or it could be a coincidence. :P
Fred and George and Bagman run about the place. I like how the false explanation of Zonko would seem to fit, but how it clashes a little with the twins' characters. The actual solution will therefore be more satisfying. The goblins are introduced a second time, to drive the point home; and Bagman tries to make Harry cheat. Finally, there is Rita Skeeter's suggestion that something is very bad about Bagman, which echoes that of Winky earlier. Any repetition reinforces a clue, and Rowling is clearly setting up Bagman as a secondary red herring. Much like she did to Lupin last year. Except Bagman isn't lovely and trustworthy and entirely loveable.

Not that Rita Skeeter is really a trustworthy source... :P But yes, I agree with all of that. Nice thinking on his feet by Bagman, though, to come up with that excuse that fast. Then again, maybe he thought of a cover story beforehand.
Sirius' note saying that ``whoever put your name in the Goblet shouldn't be feeling too happy right now'' is a very good false clue. We are led to believe Harry is getting one over on Voldemort, but in fact he is following Voldemort's plan to a t.

Indeed. Though perhaps we really should know better, what with knowing that Voldemort needs/wants to get his hands on Harry, not just have him die in some freak accident.
It isn't a major plot point, but the "Who is Hermione going with" deal is handled quite well. We got the hints that Krum was hanging around her and looking surly when she was with Harry in the last batch of chapters, and now of course the enigma has been voiced explicitly. And then, there is the description of Krum arriving with ``A pretty girl in blue robes Harry didn't know''. And then the reveal. I like it.

Indeed. Though it seems a bit unlikely that he would not recognize Hermione just because of the make-up and different hair. Rebekah's link on the other board makes clear how big a difference those things can make - but the woman is still recognizable as the same woman. Of course at a first glance from a distance he might not have recognized her, but then if he's apparently seen enough of her to decide she's "pretty", it's a bit strange.
Mr Crouch is missing, presumed ``ill'', and not in contact with anyone except through owl. This is quite a strong indication that something is very wrong. But we are offered a false indication that it is all down to the absence of his house-elf, which dampens it a little.

Yeah. Not much of a modern man, Barty Crouch.
And the Room of Requirement is introduced.

That one is very sneaky, Rowling must be quite proud of it. I wonder if she even did it on purpose - and if we wonder about that, it means it's neatly done, obviously.
Karkaroff's conversation with Snape is interesting. It makes Snape suspect again by association. And it introduces the enigma of what they are discussing, which will be explained right at the end.

Yeah, this would've been more obvious if we'd known about the Dark Mark, but we don't really, so...
We also get the news that Hagrid's mother is a giant. The mixed breed problem crops up again, as a major thematic thread throughout.

Yeah, and again with the justifications of why discriminating against giants makes sense - which we'll see confirmed later on. The problem with Rowling's dealing with the theme is that the bigotry often is at least partially justified...
And Rita Skeeter's impossible knowledge is introduced.

And Hermione gets on the case. Rather liked that too.

A few other things I noticed that are more or less plot-related:
- Krum, unlike Harry, has done his homework, he's not going to go swimming in that lake just for fun.
- Percy doesn't respect Bagman much more than his brothers, but still assumes that they have been bothering him and that if anyone's done anything wrong, it's them. Wrongly, of course.
- Harry forgetting, rather ironically, to put a bezoar in his Potions assignment. Making it all the stranger that he's the only one to think of it in book six (or, well, to read it in the book).
