I think you found a good equilibrium between writing a critical review and not straining your friendship with the author.

Other than the errors made about Doctorow and the like, which perhaps an American would've avoided, how obvious is the "Brazilian-ness" of this novel? Considering your interest for SF influenced by foreign cultures or wholly set in them, and the "global village" idea that seems to play a prominent role in this book, I'm curious to what extent Fernandes depicts his protagonist as a "world citizen", so to speak. Or to put it a different way, if Fernandes hires you to translate this novel , would someone reading your translation learn a lot about Brazil?

It is obvious in the sense that certain social media (Orkut especially) is emphasized over Facebook and MySpace. Also in the description of everyday life, there are a few references to a stronger divide than what might be found in North America or Western/Central Europe. Outside of that, it reads more like an update on cyberpunk motifs.

As for learning a lot about Brazil, not really. Learning bits and pieces about the middle class there, yes, there would be some interesting snippets.

Oh, and there'll be more Brazilian books reviewed later this year. Plus Fábio has a short story in the Steampunk Reloaded anthology that the VanderMeers have edited for release in a few months.
