Re: Hagrid, Rita, Moody, Neville, Harry, Hedwig, Cedric, McGonnagall, Hermione and Madamme Maxime Camilla Send a noteboard - 20/08/2010 02:20:22 PM
Hagrid: I suppose if what distinguishes a good guy from a bad guy in Rowling's universe is that the bad guy will ask "what's in it for me" -- which I argued in one of the earlier discussions -- then Hagrid is the ultimate good guy in his care for blast-ended skrewts. Still, I confess I am with Draco on this one.

Draco can be genuinely witty like he is there, and perhaps isn't so bad when he's not bullying people and making himself look big by picking on others.

Yes. He has intelligence. Which is what makes the early choices and lack of questioning his parents so sad. He is one of the most interesting characters of the series because of it, though. You can see him striving for his father's approval, and I suppose that is one of the major reasons why he does not break with that rhetoric. I cannot help wondering what would have happened if he had talked with his own words in the show in Diagon Alley in the first book, had become friends with Harry instead of Crabbe and Goyle...

"Moody": he is cemented as a good guy . We applaud anyone who'll turn Malfoy into a ferret (however wrong it is), and his reason for doing so is very, very good (attacking from behind is dishonourable, and so through his objection to it Moody is pegged as honourable). And I must say the "Teaching" comment is divine.

Perhaps it should have been a warning sign. I cannot see the real Moody doing this, or Rowling approving of such a blatant and cruel abuse of power.

Probably. Hindsight and all that ;)

I cannot decide whether I believe that Dumbledore has sanctioned the teaching of the unforgivable curses (or, more especially, the use of the Imperius Curse on the students). It is sensible, but it seems rather extreme, and I am not sure it is entirely in character. Then again, it does them no harm, so maybe it isn't a problem. He is not one to follow rules for the sake of it.

I'm not sure either. Surely he must know about it if he hasn't given permission? And draw his conclusions? So you'd have to conclude he has in fact given permission.

Yes. I imagine him as being in control of what happens in the school, and something as big as this...

Perhaps "Moody" asked permission using the argument that they should be able to defend themselves, and so Dumbledore agreed? I am sure it did not spring from Dumbledore.

I find it hard whether to treat Moody's character as a plot point or as a character point, so you'll forgive me if my treatment of him is a little scattered. I noticed his anger at those who laugh at the Imperius Curse. That made sense when I thought he was Moody, but it makes even more sense re-reading it and knowing Crouch Jr's story.

True, I hadn't thought of that. Also puts his reaction to Harry being able to resist it in a different light - he must be somewhat jealous.

Yes. Although he doesn't show it.

Harry: I find it a little odd that he has never asked anyone what curse killed his parents. Am I misremembering or did Hagrid tell him it was a special curse. Surely some curiosity should have triggered the question later on?

Especially when he was going to kill Sirius without knowing any lethal spells... :P

I am still for the transfiguration->pot->breaking it theory.

I suppose Harry's worry for Sirius doesn't make him a horrible person. And I like how he tried to stop him. I am sure Sirius liked that. I can picture him chuckling.

I liked the "Nice try", too.

Yes :D

Cedric: he really is set up as the perfect guy. We know from previous experience (and future scenes) that he is honourable, now we are told that he is smart, responsible and good-looking. Helpful in the kitchen is the only thing missing. In retrospect this is a sure sign of doom. You don't build up a character like that unless you are going to make him evil or dead.

Good point.

I am full of good points :|

Hermione: I am beginning to share her exasperation that Harry and Ron cannot get into their heads that you cannot apparate into Hogwarts. I am not so fond of her SPEW tactics. Perhaps it reminds me too much of me.

In fairness, they could just have apparated to outside the gates and then walked in, so Ron's suggestion wasn't entirely stupid.

Hmmm. Yes. Although that begs the question of how much of the grounds are covered by the non-apparition-protection. Walking from Hogsmede isn't really an option.
