Or relitivly early on. As in I decided I liked Perrin the best at around The Dragon Reborn.
But it takes a lot to make me dislike a character once I like him. Like Perrin and Rand. First four books Perrin was my favorite of all the characters, and I still like him a lot, even after the whole Faile thing which managed to turn most of the WoT community against him. And I really still like him as much as I did, but to read, Rand's point of view is pulling out ahead. At this points, his plots are better, Perrin hasn't actually done anything in the longest time. But I'm begining to like Rand better as a person. And yes, I know for most other people it is the exact oppisite. I didn't really like Rand the first few books, he was just a moping pestilence complaining about everything, wondering when he would make it back to the Two Rivers, and sulking about his ability to channel. But he has evolved into a true leader, willing to make hard choices for the good of the world, and ready to do what must be done. Perrin has remained basically flat throughout the books. He was depressed but resighned to what he was, and he still is. He is only begining to make the transformation to a great leader. So yes, I suppose I would change.
But then again, we would have to define liking of characters. If we are talking reading from their point of view, then it is strictly plot based. I don't care how I like them as people, only the plots that go on around them. But if we are talking with whom we would most likely be friends if we beamed ourselves into Randland and met with all the characters, that would be less likely to change. I'd still be friends with Perrin, and he would have to massacre eight or nine entire villages without explaination for that to change, but Rand would be becoming more and more my friend.

For me, it probably is a bit of a mixture of liking reading from their point of view, and whom I would regard as friends. Cyric for example is one I couldn't really ever regard as a friend, but do enjoy reading from his point of view all the time. Rand on the flip side, I would most likely be a friend with, and that wouldn't change in a hurry, but I don't necessarily reading his POV all the time. Interestingly enough though, despite the fact that they are two different ways of 'liking characters', in both instances, I will form the like early on, and sometimes the like will be similar to begin with, and I won't lose the like as such, I guess sometimes it may just shift from someone I would be friends with to someone I enjoy following the story of.
